2 Drawer File Cabinet

In a home office there are always papers that need to be filed. But you don't need a tall ugly filing cabinet being an eyesore in your nice workspace, you need a compact and efficient storage system for your business and personal paperwork. The 2 drawer file cabinet fits that role nicely.

A file cabinet with 2 drawers means you have enough space to file important tax records, health insurance information, life insurance policies and a variety of other personal and business items. You could arrange it with personal papers in the top drawer, business in the bottom. If everything is personal then put critical papers on top (insurance, etc) and more fun items on the bottom (like warranties and appliance instructions.)

Office supply stores have these cabinets in large variety and quantity. A quick trip would show you models make of metal in 3-4 different colors and then the wood and plastic varities. The wood units are generally more expensive because they look nicer. Metal units would be next because of their extreme durability (especially if they are locking and fireproof), then last would be the cheap plastic units that are better for college students with a temporary need.

When you're looking to buy one you need to consider a few things.

  • Are you buying it to match another one you already have?
  • Does it need more advanced features such as locks and fireproofing?
  • Does color or wood finish matter?
  • Does it need to be mobile with wheels and casters on the bottom or flat and not moveable?

Prices will generally range from $60-$200 depending on the material, features, size and finish.

You may also be interested in a 2 drawer lateral file cabinet. I have one in my office and it's amazingly handy. It's twice the width of a standard filing cabinet with two stacked drawers that are double wide. You can either hang files lengthwise if you have a lot of 11 1/2" x 14" papers to file, or you can have double rows of standard 8 1/2" x 11" papers. We use the two row method. The advantage is that the lateral file lets you see everything in the drawer at once, you can hold bigger papers without folding them, and there's no pinch points between two standard size cabinets as everything is seemlessly one unit.

We got ours in a cherry finish, it's made by Sauder. It's hard to tell that it's a build it yourself unit and it does a great job of keeping all our personal and business papers in once compact location. Year over year I can easily find the information I'm looking for.
